Paweł Gładziejewski, Aleksander Milczanowski – Varieties of psychedelic timelessness: an LLM-assisted qualitative study of altered temporal experience

Ordinary experience presents a world that flows in time, and is apprehended from a privileged moment of “now”. Psychedelics disturb this temporal phenomenology in ways that may be structurally distinct: time ceasing to pass, felt duration stretching toward the endless, or the experiential standpoint shifting outside time altogether, with distinct events apprehended all at once. Yet psychedelic science lacks a fine-grained map of these alterations: standard instruments compress them into single items (“transcendence of time and space”), and the vocabulary of reports tracks the surface of the experiences rather than their structure. We will present a qualitative study meant as a first step towards developing a high-resolution map of the varieties of psychedelic temporality. From 7,303 naturalistic trip reports, we extracted 3,291 passages of temporal phenomenology and coded them with a theory-driven, two-level codebook spanning multiple types of altered phenomenology of time (including felt rate and duration, disrupted flow and order, temporal relocation, three modes of timelessness, and metaphysical insight about time). Coding was performed by two independent large language models and validated against a human gold standard under a preregistered equivalence criterion, licensing coding at corpus scale. We report which categories can be coded reliably, their prevalence, and their co-occurrence structure — including whether “no-passage” and “eternity” experiences dissociate (Gładziejewski 2026) — and discuss what validated LLM coding means for investigating altered phenomenology at scale.
